Truck Week begins on September 1st so it is time to look at the best ways to avoid accidents with trucks on the roads.
Trucks are much bigger than cars and can weigh 40 to 50 times as much as the average sedan hence they take longer to stop, go slower uphill and take up much more space on the road.
When it comes to overtaking, if you are right behind the truck, you have very little vision, so stay back, allowing you to see better and see ahead of the truck. Be sure you can see that there is enough road for you to pass safely. Pass quickly but sensibly and don’t pull back in until you see that you are well past the truck and both of the truck’s headlights in your rearview mirror, which means there is now a safe space between you. Maintain the same speed, so don’t pass and then slow down directly in front of the truck.
When it comes to roundabouts allow the truck plenty of space as they will need the entire roadway to turn.
If you are being passed by a truck, don’t speed up as that will only mean that the truck will take longer to pass you. Instead slow down a little to help the truck pass safely and flash your headlights when the truck has passed, to show the driver when it’s safe to move back in.
