How Long Should I Wait after Drinking Before Driving?

Drinking and driving is against the law but if you have consumed alcohol how long should you wait after drinking before driving?

In order to be able to drive within the law and to drive safely you should wait until your blood alcohol concentration or BAC is under 0.05. BAC is the amount of alcohol contained in a person’s blood. It is measured as weight per unit of volume of blood. It is usually quoted as a percentage so 0.05% indicates that one twentieth of a person’s blood is alcohol.

However, you must remember that the alcohol does not enter into the blood stream immediately and the BAC can continue to rise for up to three hours after your last drink. The only thing which makes the alcohol leave the system quicker is time, no amount of coffee or cold showers or fresh air will make any difference.

You should wait one hour for each standard measure of alcohol you have drunk as it takes the liver that long to break the alcohol down.

Australian Warns About Excessive Drinking

A young woman from Sydney, Australia, who was in hit by a car in Las Vegas in August, has warned young people about the dangers of excessive drinking.

Brooke Baldwin, aged 21, was at the start of a six week adventure to Hawaii, mainland United States and Mexico with a friend. She was our partying in Las Vegas on August 31 and crossed a road off the strip without using a crosswalk when she was hit by a car.

She was taken to the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas with a fractured neck, smashed right leg, pelvis and right shoulder and her brain was bleeding.

She spent weeks in a coma, over two months in hospital and now has a scar on her neck from a tracheotomy, and is confined to a wheelchair until her broken leg heals.

Baldwin is lucky to be alive as she was thrown over three lanes but has no memory of the incident at all.

Although she is expected to make a full recovery, but doctors told the family they do not know how long it will take. She also suffered ‘shearing of the brain’ as her brain moved back and forth in her head due to the impact.

However, while she is pleased to be home, insurers have said they will not pay her medical bills as she was drunk, and the case is now in the hands of lawyers.

Taking Precautions as an Older Driver

As we become older our ability to drive changes. However, this does not mean we automatically have to stop driving. By learning about safe driving practices many elders can continue driving well into their older years.

It is true that older people are more likely to get into accidents and those over 70 more likely to be involved in fatal accidents. In addition, elders are more likely to be cited for traffic violations. This is due to the fact that as we get older our vision and hearing decrease and our motor reflexes become slower. We may also have problems with concentration and conditions such as arthritis may cause problems with steering and braking.

It is very important that you undergo regular medical checks up to ensure you are wearing the right eye glasses and that you check your hearing to see if you need to wear hearing aids while driving. You should also check with your doctor if any medications you might be taking could interfere with driving and ensure that you have sufficient sleep before driving to enable you to concentrate better.

According to the Nevada Department of Transportation, 63 year old Michael Douglas Pulliam was driving southbound on U.S. 93 around 20 miles north of Wells in a 2015 Nissan Sentra. He entered a construction zone, and was behind a 2008 Toyota Prius which was stopped at a temporary red light which was alternating traffic. The signal was there as they were building a wildlife safety underpass so that deer and other wildlife could safely cross from one side to the other and lessen the number of vehicle collisions with wildlife.

The speed limit had been reduced to 45 mph but at around 7.15 p.m. at mile marker 90 Pulliam smashed his car into the Prius and died at the scene from the injuries he received.

Nevada Highway Patrol does not believe that alcohol was involved in the crash but that Pulliam was not paying attention.
