Las Vegas Man Dies After Medical Episode While Driving

On Wednesday evening, February 4, a man from Las Vegas died in a single vehicle car accident but it is thought it was due to a medical episode while driving.

According to police, the accident happened shortly before 6 p.m. at the intersection of Buffalo Drive and Cheyenne Avenue. Michael Lemcool, aged 60 was driving a 2006 Dodge Caravan on Buffalo Drive. It appears that he suffered a medical episode and began to drive the vehicle into oncoming traffic. He then veered off the road and hit a power pole.

He was taken to Mountain View Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to the Clark County Coroner’s Office, his death was due to the medical episode and not related to the accident and was therefore registered as a natural death

His passenger, a 59 year old woman from Las Vegas was not injured

Australian Warns About Excessive Drinking

A young woman from Sydney, Australia, who was in hit by a car in Las Vegas in August, has warned young people about the dangers of excessive drinking.

Brooke Baldwin, aged 21, was at the start of a six week adventure to Hawaii, mainland United States and Mexico with a friend. She was our partying in Las Vegas on August 31 and crossed a road off the strip without using a crosswalk when she was hit by a car.

She was taken to the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas with a fractured neck, smashed right leg, pelvis and right shoulder and her brain was bleeding.

She spent weeks in a coma, over two months in hospital and now has a scar on her neck from a tracheotomy, and is confined to a wheelchair until her broken leg heals.

Baldwin is lucky to be alive as she was thrown over three lanes but has no memory of the incident at all.

Although she is expected to make a full recovery, but doctors told the family they do not know how long it will take. She also suffered ‘shearing of the brain’ as her brain moved back and forth in her head due to the impact.

However, while she is pleased to be home, insurers have said they will not pay her medical bills as she was drunk, and the case is now in the hands of lawyers.

Man is Hit by a Car and Died

On Saturday night, September 26, a man was hit by a car and died.

According to Las Vegas police, the accident happened at around 11.45p.m. when 26 year old Sammy Rey Robeldo of Las Vegas was trying to cross South Boulder Highway at the intersection with Tropicana. But he stepped into the oncoming traffic and he was hit by a 2014 Fiat 500L.

The Fiat was being driven by a 35 year old man of Las Vegas and he stayed at the scene. There was also a witness who confirmed to police that the car had a green light when Robledo stepped in front of it.

Robeldo was taken to Sunrise Hospital where he was pronounced dead and the Clark County Coroner’s office confirmed that he had died of multiple blunt injuries and classified his death as an accident.

This is the 78th traffic related fatality in the Las Vegas area this year.

Las Vegas Man Dies in Fatal Crash

On Friday afternoon, August 7, a Las Vegas man died in a fatal crash in Wyoming.

According to authorities, the accident happened shortly before 4 p.m. around 10 miles east of Lyman, Wyoming on Interstate 80 near mile post 52.

Billyjohn Pritchett, aged 39, was riding a 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle and traveling west bound on I 80 when he lost control of the motorcycle. Having lost control, he was thrown off the Harley Davidson and sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Pritchett, who was from North Las Vegas, was wearing a helmet but it was a non D.O.T approved skateboard helmet which was not appropriate for a motorcyclist.

Authorities are still investigating but at this time they believe that excessive speed was a contributing factor to the accident.

This fatality brings the total number of highway fatalities in Wyoming to 90 so far this year, which compares to 94 at the same time in 2014.

Young Man Dies in Crash in the Northeast Valley

On Friday night, July 3, a young man lost his life in a car crash in the northeast Valley.

According to Las Vegas Metro Police, the accident happened shortly before 9 p.m. when a 2004 Lincoln, being driven by 19 year old Brian Mandujano of Las Vegas was traveling north on Radwick Drive.

For reasons not yet known, he lost control of the vehicle and it rotated and slid across the roadway into Los Sedano Circle and then smashed into a wall near the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Owens Avenue.

The passenger in the car, 21 year old Manual Barrios, was pronounced dead at the scene and Mandujano was taken to University Medical Center with serious injuries.

Police are still investigating what caused the driver to lose control of the car. This marks the 53rd traffic-related fatality in Metro’s jurisdiction for 2015.

Woman Was Killed When Car Overturned

On Saturday, June 16, a woman was killed when her car overturned on State Route 159.

According to the Clark County Coroner’s Office and Nevada Highway Patrol, the accident happened shortly before 6.30 a.m. on the Saturday morning on State Route 159, around a mile north of Blue Diamond Road. A gray 2011 Chevrolet Impala being driven by 34 year old Las Vegas Resident, Jessica Dianne Kenney, was heading south. For reasons as yet unknown the car ran off the right side of the road and hit a sign. It then went down an embankment and over a culvert before rolling over and landing on its wheels. Kenney was not wearing a seat belt and was declared dead at the scene, which the Coroner’s Office said was due to blunt force injuries.

The crash is still being investigated.

A Woman Died in a Two Vehicle Crash

On Monday afternoon, May 11, there was a two vehicle crash in which a woman died.

According to Metro officers, the accident happened at 2.30 p.m. on Rainbow. A 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis being driven by a 68 year old man was traveling south on Rainbow in the left turn lane. The driver ran the light at Hacienda and was hit by a 2014 Audi S5 which was traveling northbound and which had a green light. The Audi hit the Mercury on the right passenger door.

A passenger in the Mercury, a 73 year old woman, was trapped in the car. She was released and taken to University Medical Center where she later died.

Both of the drivers were also taken to hospital with minor injuries and according to officers they did not think that either of them was impaired.

This is the 40th traffic related fatality in Metro’s jurisdiction so far this year. The collision is being investigated by the Accident Investigations Section.

Daughter of Councilwoman Involved in Crash

On Monday night, April 20, the daughter of Councilwoman Jeni Coke of Lake Havasu City was involved in an accident.

According to authorities, the accident occurred at around 8.30 at night in the 3300 block of London Bridge Road. Taylor Coke, aged 17 was driving in her vehicle when 53 year old William Penn of Desert Hills crossed the center line and hit her car head on.

Penn then fled the scene but officers gave chase and caught him in an area of desert nearby, when he was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, aggravated assault, criminal damage and leaving the scene of an injury accident. He was not seriously injured.

However, Taylor Coke was injured and was flown by air ambulance to Las Vegas to be treated for a broken hip and two broken legs.

This is the second time in six weeks that a child of a council member has been hurt in a car accident, the last one being in early March when the 6 year old daughter of Councilwoman Michele Lin was injured in a car crash. She has since recovered.

Serious Motorcycle Accident Sends One Man to Hospital

Early on Monday afternoon, 23 March, there was a serious motorcycle accident in the central Las Vegas Valley.

According to Metro Police, the accident happened shortly after 12.30 p.m. at 927 Decatur Boulevard near the intersection at Charleston. A 24 year old man was driving a 2014 Yamaha motorcycle in one direction and a 1991 Chevrolet pickup was approaching in the opposite direction. The pickup, being driven by a 62 year old man, then turned left in front of the motorcycle. The motorcyclist hit the rear passenger side of the pickup and flew off his motorcycle onto the road. He was transported to University Medical Center in a life threatening condition.

The man driving the Chevrolet stopped after the accident and was unhurt.

Northbound Decatur from Charleston was closed for nearly four hours while Metro’s Fatal Detail investigated the crash.

Ambulance and Scooter Collide Leaving a Person Dead

On Monday, February 9, an ambulance and a scooter collided leaving one person dead and another critically injured.

According to police, the accident happened shortly before noon where Boulder Highway becomes Fremont Street near Sahara Avenue.

A MedicWest ambulance was headed east on Sahara responding to a call with lights and sirens and the traffic was stopped at the light to allow it to pass. The scooter, with a driver and a passenger, was traveling north on Boulder Highway and entered the intersection at Sahara where it collided with the ambulance.

The driver of the scooter, 50 year old Michael Ortiz, of Las Vegas was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center where he was pronounced dead and his 49 year old female passenger was also taken to Sunrise with multiple fractures including a broken pelvis. She is said to be critical but stable.

Police closed the intersection of Fremont/Boulder Highway and Sahara for around five hours while they investigated.
