Accident in a Construction Zone Leads to Death of Las Vegas Man

On Saturday, October 3, a man from Las Vegas died following an accident in a construction zone on U.S. 93.

According to the Nevada Department of Transportation, 63 year old Michael Douglas Pulliam was driving southbound on U.S. 93 around 20 miles north of Wells in a 2015 Nissan Sentra. He entered a construction zone, and was behind a 2008 Toyota Prius which was stopped at a temporary red light which was alternating traffic. The signal was there as they were building a wildlife safety underpass so that deer and other wildlife could safely cross from one side to the other and lessen the number of vehicle collisions with wildlife.

The speed limit had been reduced to 45 mph but at around 7.15 p.m. at mile marker 90 Pulliam smashed his car into the Prius and died at the scene from the injuries he received.

Nevada Highway Patrol does not believe that alcohol was involved in the crash but that Pulliam was not paying attention.

The Reasons Why People Text and Drive

A report by AT&T, which was carried out together with Professor David Greenfield from the School of Medicine at the University of Connecticut has revealed the attitudes of those people who text and drive.

Greenfield, who is a specialist in how the brain reacts to digital technology, explains that cell phones which link to the internet, receiving texts and social media messages, actually affect the brain just like drugs, cigarettes or gambling which increase the levels of dopamine, giving a pleasurable feeling.

He says that the levels of dopamine increase simply by anticipating a message and receiving that message you were waiting for then increases the levels even more.

His theory is backed up by the survey results which revealed that six percent of respondents admitted to being texting addicts and 14 percent said they had feelings of anxiety if they did not respond to texts immediately. In addition, 17 percent said that when they read or answered a text message they felt content.

Greenfield stressed that people should not use their phone at all while driving and called for more laws and education to prevent phone usage.

GM launches compensation scheme

GM Compensation

Following the announcement by General Motors that they will begin to compensate the families of the victims of car accidents due to a faulty switch installed in 2.6 million of their vehicles, compensation specialist, Kenneth Feinberg has revealed the scheme details.

Feinberg announced that he will use the same mathematical calculation that judges, juries and lawyers have been using for decades. This takes the anticipated future lifetime earnings of the victim and adds on to that a separate amount for pain and suffering.

Feinberg was able to confirm that it will be him and not GM who is administering the fund and they would have no involvement in the actual amount of the payouts nor would they be capping any individual award. GM would also have no right of appeal.

He did acknowledge that whatever amount the families and victims received,  while it would in some way compensate them for their losses and injuries, it would never return their loved ones to them nor bring those with permanent injuries back to full health.

Drugged Driving Incidences Up in the U.S.

Marijuana legalization is sweeping the United States. Over 20 states have legalized the drug for medicinal purposes, and two states have legalized it for adults over the age of 21 to possess recreationally. However, the liberalization efforts are making some public safety experts very nervous. Particularly, they wonder if legalizing pot will lead to deadly consequences on the nation’s roads.

Columbia University recently released a study which said that over the past 10 years three times as many people have died in drugged driving automobile accidents than in the 10 years preceding. This seems to indicate that Americans are now far more susceptible to becoming the victims of drugged driving automobile accidents, even before the legalization of marijuana in Colorado and Washington is taken into account.

The nation’s younger drivers will likely be at the forefront of any surge in drugged driving related automobile accidents and fatalities. According to a report issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration over 10% of high school students admitted to having used marijuana and then driven an automobile. Additionally, the report indicates that over 25% of drugged driving automobile fatalities are people under the age of 25.

Texting While Driving Still a Problem Among US Teenagers

It isn’t surprising to anyone that teenagers in America sometimes engage in reckless behavior. But in most instances they live to fight another day. Texting while driving is quickly becoming something of an exception to that notion, however, as serious injuries and deaths resulting from accidents caused by teens texting while behind the wheel is increasing across the country. The number of teens who reported using their cell phone to text or send emails is at an all-time high according to a recent government study overseen by the Centers for Disease Control.

The study looked at other common teenage behavior in addition to texting while driving. The findings indicated that among dangerous behavior, using cell phones to send and receive text messages while operating a motor vehicle was one that was engaged in more frequently than most others.

The study anonymously surveyed 13,000 high school students across the United States and found that Massachusetts had the lowest number of teens (32%) who reported texting while driving during the previous month while South Dakota had the highest number (61%). Interestingly, a spokesperson for the CDC noted that despite the findings, teen behavior is generally healthier than it was 20 years ago.

Avoid these Three Distractions on Vegas area Roads

Distracted driving has become a national nuisance, which has contributed to thousands of automobile accidents across the country over the past several years. One of the reasons people continue to drive while distracted is because they over estimate their ability to simultaneously pay attention to conditions on the road and engage in other activities. But many people are simply not aware when they are driving distracted. Here we will take a look at three ways that Las Vegas area drivers commonly drive while distracted.

Talking on the phone

Researchers have concluded that holding a telephone conversation while driving, even when using a headset, amounts to distracted driving. This is because people engaged in conversations tend not to be fully aware of the world around them. For drivers, this means that even if they have both hands on the wheel, engaging in a telephone conversation while driving will cause them to be less aware of the road in front of them.

GPS

In the old days people used to look at maps as they drove, which was a distraction in its own right. Now people use GPS devices, which are mounted in their cars or are featured of their cell phones. Most modern GPS Services offer audio turn by turn directions. This option is preferred to having to visually look at the GPS because having to take your eyes off the road amounts to a dangerous distraction.

Dogs

When driving with dogs in the car these canine pets should always be restrained. Many Las Vegas area drivers not only allow their dogs to roam the car while they drive, but actually pet and even feed their dogs while driving. This is an extremely dangerous practice and should be avoided at all costs.
