New Study Proves Excessive Alcohol Use Kills Tens of Thousands of Americans Annually

A report released this week by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, has found that alcohol was responsible for 88,000 deaths a year, each year from 2006 to 2010.

The study not only looked at the long term effects of abuse of alcohol, which can result in heart and liver disease especially, but also at the effects of a one off alcohol splurge or binge drinking by those who could not be classed as regular alcoholics.

Interestingly there were more deaths due to binge drinking than long term abuse, such as drowning, traffic accidents, violence, suicide and falls.

However adding them both together, alcohol related deaths cut the lives short of each American who died, by a staggering 30 years.

This makes alcohol the fourth cause of avoidable death in the country behind smoking, poor nutrition and lack of activity.

Drugged Driving Incidences Up in the U.S.

Marijuana legalization is sweeping the United States. Over 20 states have legalized the drug for medicinal purposes, and two states have legalized it for adults over the age of 21 to possess recreationally. However, the liberalization efforts are making some public safety experts very nervous. Particularly, they wonder if legalizing pot will lead to deadly consequences on the nation’s roads.

Columbia University recently released a study which said that over the past 10 years three times as many people have died in drugged driving automobile accidents than in the 10 years preceding. This seems to indicate that Americans are now far more susceptible to becoming the victims of drugged driving automobile accidents, even before the legalization of marijuana in Colorado and Washington is taken into account.

The nation’s younger drivers will likely be at the forefront of any surge in drugged driving related automobile accidents and fatalities. According to a report issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration over 10% of high school students admitted to having used marijuana and then driven an automobile. Additionally, the report indicates that over 25% of drugged driving automobile fatalities are people under the age of 25.

Texting While Driving Still a Problem Among US Teenagers

It isn’t surprising to anyone that teenagers in America sometimes engage in reckless behavior. But in most instances they live to fight another day. Texting while driving is quickly becoming something of an exception to that notion, however, as serious injuries and deaths resulting from accidents caused by teens texting while behind the wheel is increasing across the country. The number of teens who reported using their cell phone to text or send emails is at an all-time high according to a recent government study overseen by the Centers for Disease Control.

The study looked at other common teenage behavior in addition to texting while driving. The findings indicated that among dangerous behavior, using cell phones to send and receive text messages while operating a motor vehicle was one that was engaged in more frequently than most others.

The study anonymously surveyed 13,000 high school students across the United States and found that Massachusetts had the lowest number of teens (32%) who reported texting while driving during the previous month while South Dakota had the highest number (61%). Interestingly, a spokesperson for the CDC noted that despite the findings, teen behavior is generally healthier than it was 20 years ago.

Can I Sue the Bar or Club Which Sold a Drunk Driver Too Much Alcohol?

Every year thousands of people are injured in accidents involving drunken drivers. Often times these accidents are caused by drivers who have had too much to drink while out on the town, such as while eating at restaurants, or partying at clubs or bars. Depending on the jurisdiction, those injured by drunken drivers, who were served too much to drink by such hospitality establishments, may have legal standing against these establishments and their proprietors.

Many jurisdictions across the country have held that businesses which serve alcohol have a responsibility to refuse service to those who appear to be overly intoxicated. Though this distinction may seem to be arbitrary, courts and legislatures have nevertheless held that serving alcohol to a drunk patron can pose a significant risk not only to the patron but also to others. For this reason many alcohol serving companies have been successfully sued over the years after having been found to have served alcohol to patrons who should have been refused.

If you, or someone you know, have been injured in an accident involving a drunk driver, you may be entitled to monetary compensation from the establishments which sold alcohol to the driver. Though these kinds of suits are delicate and complex, they have nevertheless been favorably adjudicated for plaintiffs in various parts of the country. Boulder City accident attorneys of Jolley Urga Woodbury & Little can help you and your family get the compensation that you deserve. Avoid these Three Distractions on Vegas area Roads

Distracted driving has become a national nuisance, which has contributed to thousands of automobile accidents across the country over the past several years. One of the reasons people continue to drive while distracted is because they over estimate their ability to simultaneously pay attention to conditions on the road and engage in other activities. But many people are simply not aware when they are driving distracted. Here we will take a look at three ways that Las Vegas area drivers commonly drive while distracted.

Talking on the phone

Researchers have concluded that holding a telephone conversation while driving, even when using a headset, amounts to distracted driving. This is because people engaged in conversations tend not to be fully aware of the world around them. For drivers, this means that even if they have both hands on the wheel, engaging in a telephone conversation while driving will cause them to be less aware of the road in front of them.

GPS

In the old days people used to look at maps as they drove, which was a distraction in its own right. Now people use GPS devices, which are mounted in their cars or are featured of their cell phones. Most modern GPS Services offer audio turn by turn directions. This option is preferred to having to visually look at the GPS because having to take your eyes off the road amounts to a dangerous distraction.

Dogs

When driving with dogs in the car these canine pets should always be restrained. Many Las Vegas area drivers not only allow their dogs to roam the car while they drive, but actually pet and even feed their dogs while driving. This is an extremely dangerous practice and should be avoided at all costs.

Drunk Driver Accidents in Nevada

Although drunk driving accidents are not as common as they used to be, nearly one-third of Nevada traffic fatalities still involve intoxication. Drunk driving accident cases can be complicated by the fact that the defendant is also subject to separate criminal proceedings. However, that can also make breath, blood, or urine test evidence available to help prove your case.

Punitive Damages

Drunk driving accident victims can receive the same types of compensation as other accident victims, and stand a much better chance of receiving punitive damage, which can greatly increase the value of your claim. Nevada law specifically states that if the defendant became willfully intoxicated, knowing that they would be driving, then punitive damages are available to make an example of and punish the drunk driver.

Third Party Liability

In some states you can sue the person who sold or served alcohol to the drunk driver who caused your injuries. Laws that provide for this type of third-party claim are often called “dram store” laws. Nevada does not allow this, unless the drunk driver was under 21 years old at the time of the accident. If you were injured by an underage drunk driver, then it may be appropriate to pursue a third-party claim.
