Truck Week Focuses on Reducing Accidents

Truck Week begins on September 1st so it is time to look at the best ways to avoid accidents with trucks on the roads.

Trucks are much bigger than cars and can weigh 40 to 50 times as much as the average sedan hence they take longer to stop, go slower uphill and take up much more space on the road.

When it comes to overtaking, if you are right behind the truck, you have very little vision, so stay back, allowing you to see better and see ahead of the truck. Be sure you can see that there is enough road for you to pass safely. Pass quickly but sensibly and don’t pull back in until you see that you are well past the truck and both of the truck’s headlights in your rearview mirror, which means there is now a safe space between you.  Maintain the same speed, so don’t pass and then slow down directly in front of the truck.

When it comes to roundabouts allow the truck plenty of space as they will need the entire roadway to turn.

If you are being passed by a truck, don’t speed up as that will only mean that the truck will take longer to pass you. Instead slow down a little to help the truck pass safely and flash your headlights when the truck has passed, to show the driver when it’s safe to move back in.

Spread the Word About Fire Safety Plans

In 2012 there were around 365,000 house fires in the United States and over 2,000 deaths of civilians.

You can help to reduce the numbers of fires and deaths and injuries by planning in advance.

You should make a plan of your home, ensuring easy escape routes from all parts of the house and make sure that the smoke alarms work properly. If windows have security bars, make sure they have emergency releases for easy escape.

Make sure that a member of the family is assigned to look after infants or elderly personnel or those who are disabled to help them to escape the fire and if you have visitors staying overnight, run through your escape plan with them. Do the same when you go to their houses, ask about their fire escape plan and if they do not have one, then help them to devise one. This is especially important if your children are going for a sleepover, you will want to know they are safe.

Once you leave your house, in the event of a real fire, do not attempt to go back in. Never go into a burning building, but if you think someone is inside then tell the fire department as they are professionals at home fire rescues.

Man Leaves the Scene of Accident and Hides in Dumpster

According to police, a man died after he was hit by a truck in the west valley, between Las Verdes Street and Valley View Boulevard, at around 10 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Originally the police originally believed the man had been thrown from the vehicle but later discovered that the 57 year old contractor was working in the bus lane behind his 2001 Chevrolet which was parked.

He was then struck, and the wet saw he had in his hand flew off and hit another car. He died at the scene.

The driver of the truck, a 2004 Ford F-150, was 41 year old Rafael Mendez-Soto and he ran away from the scene only to be discovered by police hiding in a nearby dumpster. Robotic Car on Show in Las Vegas

The 2014 International Global Consumer and Electronics show in Las Vegas was the scene of the unveiling of a semi robotic car which was able to park itself with no driver on board.

The appearance of certain auto pilot actions is not new. The Mercedes CLS coupe can brake by itself if the driver forgets and some BMW models can go onto automatic pilot in traffic jams and warn drivers if they are about to go over a white line.

However, most people are in agreement that the day is fast approaching when more and more robot features will be added and during the next decade the true robotic car will appear.

This development should lead to benefits for the drivers, with less stress, less fuel and lower journey times as, if all cars are robotic and speaking to each other, then traffic should flow more freely.

However, it is not certain whether drivers will relish handing over control to a robot, nor who would pay for accidents should the robot make a mistake.

Experts say that up to 90% of all accidents occur due to driver error. If you, or a loved one, have been seriously injured or killed in an automobile accident the Boulder City accident attorneys of Jolley Urga Woodbury & Little can help you get the compensation that you deserve. Two more deaths on Boulder Highway

Following two more pedestrian deaths this week on Boulder Highway, near Lake Mead Parkway, pedestrians and road safety groups are calling for drivers to slow down.

The two people killed this week were Jessica Papin, aged 27 and a mother of five children, who was walking in a marked crosswalk when she was mowed down and killed.

A couple of miles further down the road, a man walked into the path of a garbage truck and lost his life.

Although pedestrians are calling for more marked crosswalks which are also lit, traffic safety advocate, Erin Breen says that they should be more aware of their surroundings and that jaywalking was never a good idea, especially on Boulder Highway which was always busy.

She also called for drivers to slow down and drive more carefully, paying more attention to other road users and being especially vigilant for pedestrians.

Pedestrians are also asking for drivers to slow down on Boulder Highway near Lake Mead Parkway and for more marked lit crosswalks in the area.

GM launches compensation scheme

GM Compensation

Following the announcement by General Motors that they will begin to compensate the families of the victims of car accidents due to a faulty switch installed in 2.6 million of their vehicles, compensation specialist, Kenneth Feinberg has revealed the scheme details.

Feinberg announced that he will use the same mathematical calculation that judges, juries and lawyers have been using for decades. This takes the anticipated future lifetime earnings of the victim and adds on to that a separate amount for pain and suffering.

Feinberg was able to confirm that it will be him and not GM who is administering the fund and they would have no involvement in the actual amount of the payouts nor would they be capping any individual award. GM would also have no right of appeal.

He did acknowledge that whatever amount the families and victims received,  while it would in some way compensate them for their losses and injuries, it would never return their loved ones to them nor bring those with permanent injuries back to full health.
