Why You Should Use a Seat Belt

Using a seat belt is no guarantee that you will survive an automobile crash but it is foolish not to use them.

The use of seat belts has been studied so much that there is a mountain of evidence to show that they simply must be used to reduce the risk of injury or death.

Basically, wearing a front seat belt reduces the likelihood of a fatal accident for passengers sitting in the front seat by about 45 percent. For those riding in the rear of vans and sport utility vehicles the figures are even more with the likelihood of a fatal accident being reduced by near 75 percent. According to insurance statistics, using a seat belt cuts the likelihood of moderate to severe injuries by 50 percent.

And when it comes to children, if the adult is wearing a seat belt, then 92 percent of children in the vehicle do so as well. If the adult is not belted in, then only 72 percent of children are likely to be using a seat belt.

Missing Woman Turns up Dead after Being Hit by a Car

On Friday afternoon, an elderly lady was reported missing and died a few hours later.

According to Las Vegas police, 77 year old Marie Perez was reported missing on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. and people were concerned as she had no money or food and there was no way of contacting her as she had no cell phone. Red Rock Search and Rescue handed out flyers which stated that she may need medical assistance and could be emotionally distressed. They began the search but it was called off on Sunday at noon when she was discovered at UMC.

It appears that she was crossing Craig Road near Nellis Boulevard at around 7.15 p.m. when, according to witnesses, she was not in a crosswalk and she took no notice of the ‘no walk’ signal. She was then hit by a 2001 Chrysler, driven by 56 year old Glenn Muramoto of Las Vegas, and taken to the UMC Trauma Unit where death was pronounced.

Neither Muramoto nor his passenger was injured.

The accident, the 69th fatality in the Metro Jurisdiction this year,  is being investigated by the Police  Accident Investigation Section.

The Reasons Why People Text and Drive

A report by AT&T, which was carried out together with Professor David Greenfield from the School of Medicine at the University of Connecticut has revealed the attitudes of those people who text and drive.

Greenfield, who is a specialist in how the brain reacts to digital technology, explains that cell phones which link to the internet, receiving texts and social media messages, actually affect the brain just like drugs, cigarettes or gambling which increase the levels of dopamine, giving a pleasurable feeling.

He says that the levels of dopamine increase simply by anticipating a message and receiving that message you were waiting for then increases the levels even more.

His theory is backed up by the survey results which revealed that six percent of respondents admitted to being texting addicts and 14 percent said they had feelings of anxiety if they did not respond to texts immediately. In addition, 17 percent said that when they read or answered a text message they felt content.

Greenfield stressed that people should not use their phone at all while driving and called for more laws and education to prevent phone usage.

Boy Run Over by Lawnmower in Serious Accident

On Sunday, a 5 year old boy was run over by his father who was riding a lawnmower.

Cherokee County Fire Department spokesman Tim Cavender, said that the father was backing the mower up when the child walked behind it and was knocked down. First responders then arrived on the scene and airlifted him to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. Cavender said that the main lesson to be learned is that parents should always look behind them before backing up.

He on to say that the boy was conscious, breathing and talking to first responders when they arrived but that he suffered injuries to his legs, fingers, toes and an arm. None of his major arteries were cut.

Cavender stated he was sure that the father would be having a hard time coming to terms with the accident, but that police were not planning on charging him with anything at this time.
